Crack Sealing

What Is Crack Sealing?

Crack sealing is the process of creating a flexible, waterproof seal, in and over a crack or joint to stop water and road debris from entering the crack and causing further damage. The material used is a hot-applied polymer modified bituminous sealant which is flexible enough to allow for expansion and contraction of the pavement.

Starting as very small openings, cracks generally widen quickly as water and debris ingress into
the pavement and erode the sub base.

A proactive crack sealing approach is therefore the best solution in order to avoid expensive maintenance and eventual pavement reconstruction.

The Advantages of Crack Sealing

All Pavement Management Systems should include a suitable crack sealing program in order to
repair more roads for less money, thereby stretching your maintenance budget further.

Some distinct advantages of crack sealing are:

  • A crack sealed road can extend its service life by an additional 7 years.
  • 15-20 streets can be crack sealed for the same cost of repaving a single suburban road.
  • The fundamental step prior to an overlay or re-seal as it prevents reflective cracking.
  • Potholes, crocodile cracking and complete pavement failure occurrence are reduced.
  • Serves effectively as both preventative and routine maintenance.

5 Unique Reasons Why Businesses Choose National Road Sealing

  1. By cleaning every crack with compressed air, debris and small amounts of moisture are blown away. This results in sealantplugging inside the crack to create a water-tight seal and greater adhesion to the pavement.
  2. Work can be completed faster, cheaper andmore efficiently due to National Road Sealing’s use of the latest technology, computer controlled pump applicators and machines sourced from all over the world.
  3. Rather than messy dripped or screeded systems, NRS installs a perfect 50mm band 1 to 2mm thick, applied directly onto the cracked pavement by a unique over-banding applicator tip, resulting in a neat and tidy appearance with an excellent water-tight seal.
  4. Every seal is checked, measured and recorded for quality control and ready to safely accept traffic in 1-3 minutes.
  5. National Road Sealing crews are capable of sealing up to 6,500 lineal metres per day.
